30 November Update on implementation of MBS cardiac services items for 01 July 2021 November 30, 2020 By Laura Jolley Announcement, MBS, MBS review 0 With the Government’s announcement, as part of 2020-21 Budget commitment, the remaining recommendations from the MBS Review Taskforce for cardiac services will be implemented on July 2021. Building on the cardiac imaging changes introduced on 01 August 2020 and 15 September 2020, the changes planned for 01 July 2021 include a range of cardiac surgical services, which will: amend item descriptors to reflect current practice; combine similar surgical procedures; introduce items that represent a complete medical service; incentivise advanced techniques; remove procedures that no longer represent best practice; and reduce low value invasive angiography and align coronary artery stenting with current best practice. The Department is committed to working with key stakeholders and relevant clinical experts in finalising the item descriptors, endeavouring to mitigate any unforeseen consequences for stakeholders or barriers for patients. The work of the Cardiac Implementation Liaison Group (ILG) between October 2019 and February 2020 has been an invaluable part of this process and the Department appreciates the involvement of the ILG members in contributing to this work.
