Training in RACGP Standards for general practices (5th edition) for Co-Surveyors

February 2019 - ongoing

Course description
This training will go through the revised structure of the 5th edition Standards and the purpose of the new edition. It explores the explanatory notes within the Standards and what they actually mean including clarification of mandatory and aspirational Indicators. This training package is designed to screen potential new Co-surveyors and induct participants into AGPAL’s accreditation processes. By doing so, participants will have the ability to utilise their expertise and knowledge within the general practice field, to assess practices against the RACGP Standards and, in turn, address the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality Health Care quality goal for health care in Australia; that people receive appropriate, evidence-based care and that people receive health care without experiencing preventable harm. The training package includes either a one-day workshop with an online Co-surveyor assessment or a series of 4 eLearning modules with an online Co-surveyor assessment. The comprehensive online modules are facilitated by Gary Smith, a co-surveyor and Practice Manager of more than 20 years.

Learning objectives

  • Understand the 'intent' of each of the indicators and the reason behind this approach for the RACGP Standards for general practices (5th edition)
  • Identify appropriate evidence which can be used by clients to demonstrate how a practice complies with each of the relevant Standards, Criterions and Indicators
  • Apply the RACGP Standards for general practices (5th edition) within a general practice setting
  • Conduct accreditation assessments to support the quality and safety of general practice health services in order to protect patients from harm

A number of Practice Managers engage with AGPAL to complete (as Co-surveyors) accreditation surveys for RACGP Standards 5th edition for General Practice. This training package will ensure Practice Managers are using a consistent approach to assessing the requirements of the 5th edition Indicators and quality improvement. A comprehensive needs assessment has been undertaken, and has been developed as per accreditation requirements for RACGP Standards for general practices (5th edition). Details for the vocationally registered GP involved in reviewing the content of this package can also be provided if required. The development and delivery of this activity as described above meets the relevant requirements, educational standards and criteria of the RACGP CPD Program. It has been approved for the 2020-2022 triennium.

Duration: 9 hours

Presenter: Gary Smith, AGPAL & QIP co-surveyor and, Practice Manager.
