Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC): Guide to Health Privacy

The OAIC has released a comprehensive Guide to Health Privacy for all health service providers covered by the Privacy Act 1988.

The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) has released a comprehensive Guide to health privacy to help you keep patients’ personal information safe.

Health service providers routinely handle sensitive health information about their patients and customers. The guide brings together a wide range of OAIC advice to help you understand your obligations under the Privacy Act 1988 to handle personal information responsibly and transparently.

It features an eight-step plan for embedding good privacy in your practice, alongside practical advice on meeting legal requirements and obtaining consent for the collection, use and disclosure of personal information. Where there are serious breaches of privacy, the OAIC has a range of regulatory powers to hold organisations to account, including auditing privacy practices, determining complaints or awarding compensation.
