Since then we have grown and now manage several Scholarship and Subsidy Schemes as well as other workforce initiatives designed to combat workforce shortages in rural and regional areas. The Office of Rural Health, situated in Roma, South West Queensland, is a unit within the Office of Rural and Remote Health Branch, in the Policy, Strategy and Resourcing Division of Queensland Health, and: Provides a source of expertise concerning health workforce issues in rural communities, including managing Queensland Health's largest scholarship scheme - the Rural Scholarship Scheme - as well as the Allied Health 'Area of Priority' Scholarship Scheme, the Bonded Medical Scholarship Scheme and other Queensland Health scholarship and subsidy schemes. Promotes statewide strategic workforce planning and policy development activities across the health workforce, in relation to endorsed health priority areas, population groups and reform agendas. Liaises with Health Service Districts and Government agencies on rural health issues and supports the Minister for Health's Subcommittees in relation to rural workforce issues. .

This is distinct from the role of the rest of the health system whose primary focus is on health care services to individuals and families. Key functions: Coordinate disease control initiatives, including response to and notification of disease outbreaks; Undertake a range of environmental health initiatives including monitoring compliance with and enforcing public health legislation in relation to food safety and standards, regulated drugs and poisons and tobacco control; Develop, coordinate and support public health interventions for priority health issues of state-wide and local significance. Current priority issues are nutrition, physical activity, tobacco control, skin cancer prevention, injury prevention and mental health promotion. Undertake epidemiology and health surveillance activities including the collation, analysis, monitoring and dissemination of information on health status and disease trends; Provide specialist public health advice to, and develop the capacity of health services, other sectors and the community to collaboratively plan and implement effective public health programs.

It replaces the General Practitioner Advisory Committee which was established in 1996 as an advisory committee to the NSW Department of Health. The NSW General Practice Council provide expert and strategic advice to the Minister for Health and NSW Health and facilitates the involvement of general practitioners in the development of health policies and initiatives aimed at improving the health of the people of NSW. Members and the Chair are appointed by the Minister for Health under section 20 of the Health Administration Act 1982 for a specified term. Membership includes the key NSW general practice representative groups and other agencies and individuals who have a role in promoting and delivering high quality health care.

We answer enquiries about all aspects of multicultural communication and provide consultancy services, including communication and social marketing campaigns targeting people from CALD backgrounds. We also provide advice to other agencies and workers undertaking research with CALD communities. We provide strategic advice to NSW Health, and handle enquiries from health staff about all aspects of multicultural communication.
